A Historical Perspective Into Surgery - 1842 Words
Introduction In the context of surgery, the formalisation of the branch, plastic surgery, has been done so relatively recently. (Reference 1) And even more recently, has there been the division of the field, into its two major branches: cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery reference 2. However, on deeper analysis, the distinction between the two seems ambiguous, and the text pertaining to the formation of the two is limited. This project will give a historical perspective into the emergence of plastic surgery as an isolated field, and thereafter the formation of cosmetic surgery as a domain within the field. The term plastic, is derived from the Greek, ââ¬Å"plastikosâ⬠, meaning ââ¬Å"able to be moulded.â⬠reference 1 The account of the first ever surgical procedure, which attempted to ââ¬Å"mouldâ⬠the human body can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians reference 2.
